Drenching rain and thunderstorms will settle over South Texas from Friday night into Saturday, bringing needed wet weather to an area plagued by drought.
“Much of South Texas will be getting a thorough soaking Friday night through Saturday,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski said.The welcome rainfall will come courtesy of a cold front that will stall over the region for a time. This front will first sweep through the west-central Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi Valley with locally severe thunderstorms into Friday evening.
Houston, Texas, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, are among the communities that could be hit with storms capable of producing hail, downpours and locally damaging winds at the end of the week.As the front sags southward Friday night, thunderstorms may remain locally feisty as they reach South Texas. The bigger story this far south, however, is likely to be the rain.o put this amount of rain in perspective, Laredo averages 2.49 inches of rain for the entire month of May, while McAllen and Brownsville typically receive 2.10 and 2.64 inches, respectively.This part of Texas is suffering amid moderate to extreme drought, so rainfall amounts of this magnitude will go a long way in helping to ease the dry conditions.However, with the excess of rain falling in a short amount of time, it won’t have nearly as much time to soak into the ground and could cause flash flooding problems.
“While flash flooding can be dangerous at any time, the overnight period can be particularly dangerous as floodwaters may be hard to spot for drivers out on the roads,” AccuWeather Meteorologist said.
