Climate change’s effects are not evenly distributed over the globe, nor are they consistent or predictable. There is little question, however, that they may contain disastrous aspects. There is also increasing concern that climate change may present a huge global security threat.

By anticipating future damage and minimizing threats to our ecosystems, human health, property, and infrastructure, we may be able to make the required modifications to offset this trend, offer economic advantages, and avoid social unrest..

The Bermuda National Trust commissioned this study to look at how climate change may affect Bermuda, with the goal of sparking more informed debate among the community. The first section of the report looks at the economic, social, and physical vulnerabilities of all tiny islands, as well as how they relate to Bermuda.

The subject of global food security, as well as the reality that the island’s two main economic sectors, international business and tourism, may be greatly impacted by climate change on both a global and local scale, are given special attention. Bermuda, on the other hand, has some intrinsic traits that make it resilient.

It also has the chance to lead by example for small oceanic islands by adopting policies and proactive steps for sustainable development while mitigating global climate change processes. With the island’s Sustainable Development Plan, the basic framework is already in place.

It looks at why present changes are different from those seen in the past, the impact of greenhouse gases (GHG), and how human activities contribute to the accumulation of these gases. The effects on global temperatures, rainfall patterns, storm activity, flash floods, drought, and sea level as a result are then discussed.

We understand Bermuda’s climate in light of our geographic location and regional oceanographic impacts, as well as how projected global changes may impact us regionally and locally.

It raises doubts about how much we can depend on the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCCgeneric )’s predictions for our region, but accepts that the lack of more locally relevant data should not preclude us from taking immediate action.

A brief history of Bermuda’s sea level rise is presented, as well as the most recent observations of the current rate of rise. It explains why sea level rise forecasts for the island range between 0.59 m and 2.0 m. The IPCC’s maximum expected rise for this century is 0.59 meters (excluding the impact of the ice sheets melting)

Climate change is a topic that has firmly taken center stage on the global arena, and many people feel it will be one of the most significant issues humankind will face this century and beyond. Climate change challenges people all across the world’s basic necessities: water, food, availability, health, and land and environmental use (Stern, 2006).

It will have an impact on jobs and livelihoods, as well as food security and recreational opportunities. If current projections are correct, climate change-induced starvation might force more than 250 million people to flee their homes by 2050. 1-3 billion people might face severe water shortages by the end of the century, and climate-related diseases might kill approximately 200 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa alone.

The Observer reported in 2004 that a secret Pentagon report predicted that abrupt climate change could push the world to the brink of anarchy as countries develop nuclear weapons to defend and secure dwindling food, water, and energy supplies, concluding that the threat to global stability far outweighs that of terrorism (Townsend and Harris, 2004).

While we are aware that the climate has changed tremendously throughout history, it is the current rate of change that offers such a concerning picture. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s most recent study (IPCC, 2007), global warming has increased by almost 1°C since the pre-industrial era.

A warming of 1.5–2°C is practically inescapable due to delay in the effects of greenhouse gases on the climate system. One of the difficulties we have in dealing with this transition is the often contradictory information we are given. Climate change is difficult to anticipate, and existing models frequently differ regarding the severity of the hazard.

However, the IPCC’s fourth assessment (2007) currently argues that the majority of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-twentieth century is highly likely due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, present scientific evidence suggests that, while human activity has been a key contributor in hastening this change, we are in a position to adjust our behavior and help halt this trend if we act quickly.
