On Aug. 30, Kate became the 11th named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, weakening to a depression by Tuesday morning. Kate is projected to spend its entire life hundreds of miles east of Bermuda, in the open seas of the Atlantic.

And, as Ida left a trail of torrential rain and floods across a large part of the United States, a new strong tropical wave formed off the coast of Africa early Tuesday.

This tropical wave had formed Tropical Depression Twelve by 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday. With maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, it was roughly 335 miles southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands.

This new depression is the most likely to become a tropical storm of all the regions being monitored in the Atlantic basin through the middle of this week. Larry will be given to it if it strengthens into a named storm with sustained winds of 39 mph or higher.

It has the potential to strengthen into a hurricane in the long run.
