Flooding could become a problem, especially in places with poor drainage, rivers, and streams that are already above flood stage. The wet weather from the past few days is expected to continue into the new week.
A warning about possible flooding was issued for western Washington and Oregon due to heavy rainfall and melting snow at higher elevations.
On Sunday, temperatures in cities like Seattle and Portland are expected to reach the lower 60s Fahrenheit. This is unusual for late January, where the average temperature is usually around 48-49 degrees. Last January, the temperature did not go above 60 degrees in these cities.
Saturated soil and melting snow may increase the risk of landslides in western Washington and western Oregon in the upcoming week.
Until Sunday, western Washington could get 1-2 inches of rain, with higher amounts in certain areas. Seattle may experience ponding on streets and highways. The Skokomish River in northwest Washington is at minor flood stage, and heavy rainfall could raise it to moderate flood stage.
Although the river levels are not expected to reach major flood stage, caution is advised. Boaters, especially those in small crafts, should be careful due to hazardous seas and strong winds.
In the northeastern states, a brief break in the rainy pattern is expected early in the week. Seattle might see a break from wet weather on Sunday night into Monday, but showers will return by Monday night. Temperatures in Seattle and Portland will cool down throughout the week.
Another heavy wave of moisture is expected to hit the West Coast by late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing more rain and strong winds. As cooler air spreads, snow levels will drop, leading to heavy snowfall in higher elevations.
