Biggest Storm Causes Problems in California

A very strong, long-lasting river of air is moving across California. This is causing many problems, like a lot of people losing power and a risk of dangerous flooding and mudslides. Here are the important things happening:

High Flood Risk: There’s a lot of rain over Southern California, especially in Los Angeles. This is making the risk of flooding very high. There might be really heavy rain and flooding in Orange County until Tuesday.

Power Outages: More than 500,000 people in California have no power because of strong winds and rain. This is mainly happening along the coast. In the northern part of the state, the wind was very strong, up to 100 mph.

One Person Died: In Yuba City, about 40 miles north of Sacramento, a man died because a big tree fell on him. This happened during strong winds.

Wettest Day in 20 Years: In Los Angeles, it rained a lot on Sunday – 4.10 inches! This is the wettest day since December 28, 2004. Usually, February is the month with the most rain in Los Angeles.

Very Rare Rain Risk: The Weather Prediction Center says there’s a very rare risk of too much rain for more than 14 million people in Southern California. This includes places like downtown Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Long Beach. They expect 3 to 6 inches of rain in many areas – more than what they usually get in a whole month.

Dangerous Landslides and Floods: There’s a very dangerous situation in the Hollywood Hills area and around the Santa Monica Mountains. Many homes had to be evacuated. There are landslides, flooded roads, and other problems in places like Malibu, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Brentwood, and Burbank.

Evacuation Orders: Some people in Santa Barbara, San José, Los Angeles, and Ventura County were told to leave their homes because of the risk of floods and landslides.

Travel Problems: There’s going to be a lot of snow in eastern California and along the border with Nevada. The Sierra Nevada will get a lot of snow, making travel very hard. The wind will be strong, causing whiteout conditions above 5,000-6,000 feet.

Schools Close: Many schools in Santa Barbara County canceled classes because of the bad weather. Some are doing classes online instead.

State of Emergency: The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, declared a state of emergency for many counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. This helps them get more help during the emergency.

People in Los Angeles are told to stay at home and not travel because it’s dangerous. The roads are flooded, and it’s not safe. The worst of the storm is expected until Tuesday. The mayor of San Diego also warned about a lot of rain and possible floods. Some areas might get half an inch of rain per hour.

The storm is causing problems in different parts of California, and people are being careful and trying to stay safe.
