Alex Tropical Storm on Toward Bermuda
The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season in 2022 has made landfall. Tropical Storm Alex formed Saturday night off the southeast coast of Florida, and today AccuWeather meteorologists say the storm is on its way to Bermuda, where it will shower the island country with rain and gusty winds while stirring up a broad area of choppy seas.
Alex formed in the midst of a swarm of storms that meteorologists have been following since early last week. On Saturday, the disturbance proceeded inland as a tropical rainfall in Florida, bringing the Sunshine State its first taste of tropical weather and wreaking havoc in Miami with floods.
After crossing Florida, the rainfall was able to organize into Tropical Storm Alex due to decreased wind shear, according to Adam Douty, a senior meteorologist at who routinely publishes tropical outlooks for the Atlantic Ocean. The storm’s intensity peaked Sunday night, with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour, just 4 miles per hour less than a Category 1 hurricane.
Despite 40 mph gusts within the core, which is under tropical storm criteria, strong wind shear hindered the system from becoming a full-fledged tropical storm when it moved onshore Saturday morning (maximum sustained winds 39-74 mph). Even if the system didn’t get a name by the time it got to Florida, Meteorologists had been warning all week that it would deliver life-threatening flooding to South Florida.
As Alex moves northeast, seas will be churned across the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, resulting in dangerous surf and stronger, more frequent rip currents from the northwest Florida coast to Virginia’s Tidewater region.
Minor beach erosion and coastal flooding are also possible, particularly during high tide. Alex’s path will take it within a few hundred miles of Bermuda, putting it on a collision course with the island. As a result, as of Sunday morning, a tropical storm warning has been issued for the island. Alex was about 100 miles northwest of Bermuda as of 8 a.m. EDT Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. The “closest approach” to Bermuda, according to the NHC, will take place Monday afternoon.
While the center is predicted to pass to the north of Bermuda on Monday, it might bring gusty winds and rain to the islands, though no major effects are expected, according to US weather forecaster.
Through Monday, forecasters expect a general inch or two of rain (25-50 mm) across Bermuda, with Local StormMaxTM of 3 inches (75 mm).
As the storm passes over the islands, wind gusts of 40-60 mph (60-100 km/h) are likely, with Local StormMaxTM of 65 mph (105 km/h).
The island can endure a major tropical storm or Category 1 hurricane with minimum impact and damage because to strict building rules. Furthermore, because there are no natural reservoirs or springs on the island, rainwater is captured and recycled, so any rain that does fall is beneficial to the region. As a result, Real Impact TM Scale for Hurricanes in Bermuda gives the system a rating of less than one.
