California Causes Hundreds of Mudslides

A very strong storm hit parts of California. It made lots of rain and snow. The storm caused problems like mudslides and flooding. Here’s what’s happening:

More rain and snow: It’s still raining and snowing in Southern California. This could bring more floods and mudslides. Some places in Los Angeles County got almost 1 foot of rain since Sunday. Rain might also cause floods in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. The weather experts say there’s a 2 out of 4 chance of too much rain in these areas.

Over 300 mudslides in Los Angeles: Los Angeles saw more than 300 mudslides. Even though the worst of the rain is over, there could still be floods and mudslides. Roads are blocked by trees and debris. People are told to be very careful if they go outside.

Snow makes traveling hard: The storm also brought heavy snow. It covered parts of the Sierra Nevada and mountains in Southern California. Traveling is very hard in these areas because of snow and strong winds. The snow will spread to other states like Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.

Three people died: The storm caused three deaths in California. They were hit by falling trees during the strong winds.

Thousands without power: More than 150,000 people in California don’t have electricity. This is mainly in the northern parts of the state. Violent winds knocked down trees and power lines.

In Los Angeles, streets became rivers. Cars were swallowed, and people were stranded. Scott Toro from Studio City said the mudslide scattered cars and blocked their street. Some houses were damaged, but luckily no one got hurt badly.

The Mayor of Los Angeles declared an emergency because of the heavy rain. Many mudslides and debris flows were reported. Some houses were damaged, and some people had to leave.

Crews are working hard to fix the roads. Two areas are still under evacuation orders. Even though there was a lot of damage, officials say it could have been worse.
