California Historic Blizzard
A very strong winter storm is now in California. It will bring a lot of snow, strong winds, and even a blizzard to the mountains until the weekend.
This storm will cover California with a lot of snow, which is the most snow this year. It’s dangerous for people who are traveling, but it’s good for the water supply and tourism in the state.
The wind was very strong, up to 140 miles per hour, in the highest parts of the Sierra Nevada on Thursday. The storm will bring even stronger winds and heavier snow until the weekend, making it very hard to travel.
The National Weather Service in Reno, Nevada, said on Friday that traveling over the Sierra passes is already very dangerous and will get worse. They said it’s time to stay where you are and be safe.
The snow will come down very fast, maybe 3 to 5 inches every hour from Friday to Saturday, especially in the Sierra Nevada.
This heavy snow will pile up quickly. In just a few days, there could be 6 to 12 feet of snow in some parts of the mountains.
The worst conditions will be at the highest parts, where the wind could be more than 100 mph, and there will be a lot of snow. The wind will be so strong that it will be hard to measure how much snow there is. There might be big piles of snow because of the wind.
On Thursday, the wind was already strong, up to 60 to 80 mph, in places higher than 3,000 feet.
The snow and wind will make rare and long-lasting blizzards in much of the Sierra and some other places in the north. It will be very hard to see because of the snow.
Because of these conditions, it’s likely that there will be big problems in the higher parts of the Sierra Nevada on Friday and Saturday, the Weather Prediction Center said.
Yosemite National Park is closed from Friday to at least Sunday afternoon because of the blizzard warning. People are asked to leave as soon as they can because there could be about 8 feet of snow.
Unlike other storms this winter, this one will bring snow even to places not very high up. Some areas around 5,000 feet could get almost a foot of snow until the weekend. Even places lower than that, like Reno, Nevada, could get a few inches of snow. There will also be strong wind, up to 60 mph, in these lower places, along with snow.
Because of these hard conditions, it’s very dangerous to travel on the roads, especially in the Sierra, until the weekend. Some big roads like I-80 might be closed for a long time.
