Climate Control Strategies in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an island territory in the Caribbean, famous for the white sand beaches, tropical rain forests and a tropical climate. But Puerto Rico has many problems as a result of climate change. Sea level rise, hurricanes and heat, which are nature’s elements are in one way or the other worsening the lives of its inhabitants and the environment. In this article, we will look at basic techniques being employed by Puerto Rico to solve some of these issues.

An understanding of Puerto Rico’s climate would be helpful to the prediction of the magnitude of such negative impacts.

Puerto Rico is a tropical climate, which means that it is warm there throughout the year. The YZF has two seasons; rainy season from April to November and the dry season from December to March. Flooding which occurs in large parts of the country is another problem during the rainy season since hurricanes are a common disaster associated with this season. Hurricanes are known to be on the rise in intensity due to climatic change this in turn leads to losses in terms of property, infrastructure and environment.

This objective is to preserve moist and dry forests, peat land, wetlands, and other areas of natural ecosystems.

Therefore environmentalists see main role of the forests in Puerto Rico in regulating the climate condition. Carbon dioxide as one of the greenhouse gases is taken by trees through the process of photosynthesis. They also assist in preventing storms because they also assist in preventing the erosion of the soil helping prevent wind and enormous amount of water during storms.

Currently Puerto Rico is struggling to conserve forests engaging in reforestation and the development of national parks. For instance, El Yunque National Forest, is possibly one of the most essential resources of the island because it is the only tropical rainforest in the USFS. The measures to reforestation and support the existing greens space contribute to climate change mitigation and wise use of available resources on the island.

Using Renewable Energy

Wind is among the aspects of mitigation of climate change in Puerto Rico through use of renewable power. Oil and coal are examples of fossil fuels which release dangerous gaseous products when burned. Sources of energy including the sun and wind are environmentally friendly compared to one using fossil fuel.

Currently the island of Puerto Rico is paying attention to solar energy by putting solar panels in people’s houses, schools and other facilities. Power generation is also being generated through wind farms. Renewable power sources can make a contribution to the decrease the dependency on imported oil and provide a positive impact on climatic change in Puerto Rico.

Easing Traffic Congestion

Transportation remains one of the leading causes of the emission of greenhouse gases in the current world. Most of the residents depend on car transport in Puerto Rico, and this causes a significant amount of air pollution. To this end, the government is integrating efforts towards enhancing the public transport systems.

This project, for instance, is the Tren Urbano, a metro system in San Juan metropolitan area, is better compared to common conventional means since it can offer a clean method of transport. Buses and public transportation services as well are also in the process of being enhanced. Getting people to switch from car based transport to public transport can make a big impact on pollution and traffic.

Managing Waste Effectively

He also mentioned that another key approach towards reduction of climate change in Puerto Rico is on waste management. One contributes methane gas, a potent green house gas, to the atmosphere when wastes rot in landfill sites. This is possible through the management of landfill waste through efficient ways of waste disposal through the environment.

Initiatives toward recycling are being today implemented all over the island. It is recommended that household rubbish is sorted with the view of categorizing the recyclable components such as the plastic, paper, glass samples etc. Disposing organic waste food into a compost bin can help convert it to a useful type of fertilizer. All these efforts not only save on wastes but also go along way in developing a cleaner and healthier society.

Educating Communities

The people of the world must and can be educated to fight climate change. In Puerto Rico, school and other community based organizations are educating individuals on methods of conserving the environment. Recycling, water conservation and Tree planting is some of the things that children are taught. The Teacup also notes that adults are being trained on Leave no Trace or saving energy and disaster preparedness among other sustainable practices.

People get informed about climate change through social media, radio, and television public campaigns. More often, when the people get to understand the problem they go a head and start protecting the environment.

It is Important for Schools to be Ready in Case a Hurricane or Another Disaster Strikes

Hurricanes are one of the biggest problems of Puerto Rico. The island has been hit in the past by bad storms including Hurricane Maria of September 2017 which claimed many lives and destroyed so many properties. In climate management, it is mandatory to prioritize the management of natural disasters.

The signs that have been established include use of early warning to notify people of oncoming storms. Neighborhoods are taught on how to behave during disasters for instance moving or locking themselves indoors. Better housing and more effective shelter from the hurricanes and flood are being developed. All of them contribute to people’s safety during storms and other conditions that are considered dangerous.

Conserving Water Resources

Water is scarce in Puerto Rico and became more apparent during climate change related drought situations. Sustaining its water resources helps guarantee its availability even if it is out of season for the same.

Individuals are asked to practice water conservation and this has resulted to adoption of devices such as low flow sink faucets and low flow toilets. Most of these are in installation to harvest rain water for irrigation and other uses. Farmers are also being empowered to apply water more wisely in their productions processes. This enables safeguarding of water sources /sources and general improvement of the ability of the island to overcome drought periods /period.

Promoting Sustainable Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the sources of revenue in this island called Puerto Rico. Nevertheless, conventional practices can be detrimental to the environment because they) deplete soil nutrients and contribute to emission of greenhouse gases. To counter these problems, the sustainable farming practices are today being encouraged.

As for the kind of crops that can be grown, other than annual crops and vegetables the farmers are encouraged to also grow fruits, fodder and a variety of crops, no use of harmful chemicals or bad fertilizers. Trees and shrubs should be planted around farmland so that instead of eroding away, farmland can use them to prevent soil erosion and crop shading. They enhance the capacity of the soil, check emission and conserve the biological diversity of the island.

Working Together

Indeed, everybody wants to contribute to fight against climate change. To date, the government of Puerto Rico, companies, and local residents have to look for the fixes. These organizations are also using their resources to support the cause by way of funding and Consultancies.

Currently the island participates in international efforts such as the Paris Agreement on emission reduction of greenhouse gases. Other countries and organizations can also learn from Puerto Rico and hence PCSA can partner with other countries or organizations to use collaborative methods in enhancing its climate control measures.

Conclusion

There is a realization in Puerto Rico that many steps need to be taken in order to address the problems of climate change. Some of the activities the island is investing in include ensuring the protection of the forest, increasing the use of renewable energy, enhancing and encouraging the people to take public means of transport, managing waste properly and ensuring that more people are made aware of these changes. All of these efforts assist not only the territory of Puerto Rico but also help to combat climatic changes internationally.

Climate change treats no one. It turns out the common man can be part of solutions toward environmental protection. Little things, like not littering, turning off the tap when not needed and not leaving lights on when you’re not in the room, all count for a lot. As the thoughts above presented, collaborating we are able to create a better future for the generations to come, qualitative in terms of health, and ecological in terms of impact on the Earth.
