Easter weekend Snow Climate In US
Don’t tell Old Man Winter that it’s been nearly a month since the first day of spring. Through the middle of next week meteorologists say there will be many chances for snow to fall and potentially accumulate in portions of the Northeast.
Although many people believe snow is normally gone by the middle of April in parts of the Northeast, spring is often a tug-of-war between winter and summer. That isn’t always the case, as proven by the impending weather pattern, which will come after several days of mild weather, which brought temperatures back to 70 degrees for some.
According to Meteorologist, snowflakes can be observed across the Appalachians in most Aprils, and there is normally at least a minor accumulation of snow every two to three years in the central and southern regions of the mountain chain. In interior places such as northern New York and northern New England, snow can fall and pile many times throughout the fourth month of the year, according to Meteorologist.
“It tends to flake every April at some point and probably snows an inch or two every few years as far south as the North Carolina mountains,” Meteorologist said.
Despite the fact that the sun warms the ground significantly in the spring, it is actually simpler for snow to fall in the spring than in the autumn. This is due to the fact that the higher atmosphere remains cold in the spring and struggles to get cold in the fall.
Through the end of the month, the next weather pattern will favor southward dips in the jet stream. When the jet stream operates in this manner, it creates a pool of cold air, which is just enough to allow wet snow to fall. Jet stream dips earlier this spring and this winter contributed to hazardous snowstorms and fatal crashes on some interstate roads.
According to meteorologists, strong snow squalls are unlikely during the next two jet stream dips, but episodes of snow and snow showers are probable. The first and weaker of the two jet stream dips will occur during the Easter weekend, coinciding with the passage of a cold front through the region. Spotty showers are expected to explode across the Appalachians on Saturday as the front approaches.
Because the atmosphere warms up ahead of the front, some of the showers will likely intensify into thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening, causing gusty gusts and maybe small hail over the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts. Temperatures will rise into the 60s and reach 70 degrees in much of the Interstate 95 corridor, as well as into the mid-50s and mid-60s in the Appalachian Mountains.
“As the cold front passes through the region from west to east, temperatures will plummet,” Meteorologist said. “And rain will turn to snow over interior areas, particularly in the Northeast’s higher terrain, with some slushy accumulation possible by Saturday evening.”
Over the mountains, lows on Easter Sunday morning will range from the mid-20s to the lower 30s. Snow showers across northern and western New York, as well as northern New England, may last long enough to cover some grassy surfaces with a little accumulation.
Between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the air around Interstate 95 will not cool quickly enough for any snowflakes to fall. Sunday’s highs are expected to be 10-15 degrees cooler than Saturday’s, with highs generally in the mid-50s from Boston to New York City and Washington, D.C. On Easter Sunday afternoon, temperatures in the mountains may only reach the low to mid-40s. On Sunday, snow showers are expected across the highlands from northern Pennsylvania to New England.
