At least 12 people, including three children, were killed on Thursday by severe thunderstorms that raced across the French island of Corsica and tore through portions of Italy and Austria, according to BBC News.

According to The Associated Press, one of those murdered was a 13-year-old girl who was climbing a tree in the French coastal village of Sagone when the violent storm swept through.

The storms were described as “very powerful” by Gilles Simeoni, head of the Executive Council of Corsica, according to the AP.

Since severe storms tore through the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy this week, the weather pattern throughout parts of Europe has shown to be unstable. Forecasters issue a warning that this pattern might persist over the next few days.

According to France’s meteorological office, Météo-France, the catastrophic thunderstorms caused destructive wind gusts across most of the island of Corsica, with the maximum wind gust of 140 mph (225 km/h) being recorded in Marignana, France, on Thursday morning.

This wind speed is comparable to an Atlantic basin Category 4 major hurricane.
The storms that affected the island passed through southern France, the Alps, and northern Italy on Wednesday night and into Wednesday morning before making landfall in Corsica.

In addition to producing hurricane-force winds and being fatal in Corsica, these storms also drenched parts of southern France and Hamburg, Germany, with torrential downpours.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Socoa, France, which is in the extreme southwest of the country close to the Spanish border, received almost 3 inches (75 mm) of rain at an average rate of over 2 inches (50 mm) per hour. Such rates have the potential to flood entire areas in a matter of minutes and produce severe flash flooding.
