Flooding Downpours Slam China 17 dead

Rainfall totals in portions of southern China have surpassed a foot this week, and  Meteorologists warn that the downpour

This week, a deluge of rain has caused flash floods and landslides in parts of central and southern China. At least 17 people have died as a result of the severe weather, and meteorologists  warn that the disaster is far from over.

Over the last three days, the Chinese province of Hunan, as well as the southern Guangxi and Guandong regions, have been hammered particularly hard. Since June 5, weather stations in these locations have recorded 8-16 inches (205-405 mm) of rain, with locally greater totals. According to local news sources, some of the stations have experienced unprecedented rainfall.

Around 1.8 million people in Hunan have been affected by flooding, with nearly 300,000 being forced to flee for their lives, according to official figures.
