How Hurricane Lee Will Impact Northeast Weather
In the midst of a Canadian high-pressure system, Hurricane Lee’s expansive circulation is fostering delightful autumnal conditions across a significant portion of the eastern United States. This weekend, Hurricane Lee will continue to churn up rough surf along the Atlantic coastline. However, the most severe impacts will be felt in eastern New England as Lee makes landfall in the Canadian Maritimes on Saturday. Despite the official start of fall being a week away, cooler autumnal weather has arrived ahead of schedule, bringing golden daytime warmth and hints of the upcoming season at night.
The weekend weather from the Midwest to the Northeast and parts of the Southwest will mirror typical conditions for late September. Those looking for cozy fires, autumnal mums, and pumpkin spice lattes will feel right at home. Despite some brief temperature dips in late August, the coming days will bring consistent low humidity and the coolest conditions since spring.
In New York City, temperatures dipped to 61°F on September 1st. From September 3rd to the 13th, nights became stickier, with lows ranging from the upper 60s to upper 70s. Typically, mid-September lows are in the lower 60s.
To combat the evening chill, some New Yorkers may need a jacket. A breeze from Hurricane Lee will enhance the autumnal coolness until Saturday. Daytime highs in New York City will hover in the 70s throughout the weekend.
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., will experience a similar scenario, with low humidity, pleasant daytime warmth, and cool nights. Daytime temperatures will range from the upper 70s to mid-80s. In the central Appalachians to the eastern Great Lakes region, daytime highs will be near 70, with nighttime lows ranging from the mid-40s to lower 50s.
Cities like Charlotte and Atlanta will also experience a cool spell, providing relief from a hot and humid summer. Atlanta hasn’t seen temperatures drop below 66°F since June, and Charlotte’s lowest temperature since June was 60°F in early September. Overnight temperatures in both cities will be within a few degrees of these values this weekend.
High temperatures in Virginia, the Carolinas, and northern Georgia will be in the low to mid-80s, with nighttime lows in the mid-60s. In the southern Appalachians, highs will reach the mid- to upper 70s.
For New England areas affected by flooding and damage from Hurricane Lee, conditions will improve for storm cleanup on Sunday.
While cooler and drier conditions dominate much of the East this weekend, the Gulf Coast will remain warm, humid, wet, and intermittently thundery.
Looking ahead, cooler breezes and calmer seas will prevail as Hurricane Lee moves away from Atlantic Canada next week. However, an approaching low-pressure system will bring increased humidity, clouds, showers, and sporadic thunderstorms from west to east on Sunday and Monday.
Meteorologists will closely monitor another tropical system over the Atlantic, potentially impacting the East Coast with rough seas and building surf later next week. While its path may lead it near Bermuda, the East Coast of the U.S. remains within the potential trajectory of this system.
