New Tropical Depression Forms
On Wednesday afternoon, a tropical wave in the Atlantic acquired intensity over the open waters of the central Atlantic, forming Tropical Depression 18, which could intensify into Tropical Storm Sam later in the season.
Forecasters say there’s a wide range of possibilities for where the emerging tropical danger may track throughout the basin, but they warn anyone from Bermuda to the Bahamas, the East Coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada to keep an eye on it.
The National Hurricane Center called Tropical Depression 18 Invest 98L since it was located several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and heading westward at 15 mph early Thursday morning. The maximum sustained winds are currently at 35 mph.Ā Meteorologist “The system has gained a clear area of low-level circulation, with banded convection wrapping around a well-defined center.” “It has been named Tropical Depression 18 since it is showing indications of strengthening this afternoon. It could become a tropical storm on Thursday if these signals of strengthening continue.”
Sam is the next name on the Atlantic’s list for 2021. On Wednesday, satellite images revealed high, wispy clouds over the top of the system, indicating that thunderstorms connected with the tropical depression have lots of opportunity to build.
Climate and Weather forecasters said that further development into a designated storm could happen as early as Friday.
“During the middle or later part of next week, this system is expected to gradually organize and intensify, allowing it to track near the Leeward Islands as a tropical storm or hurricane,”Ā Meteorologist said
There are things in the environment around the depression that might both induce and prevent the depression from strengthening. The wind shear surrounding the system is mild, which could aid in the feature’s strengthening. However, by midweek, the tropical rainfall was surrounded by dry air and dust, which could limit its intensification over the next few days.
The strength of the system, according to recent climate experts, may help to determine where it eventually tracks.
“As long as the system does not immediately intensify into a severe tropical storm or hurricane, the trade winds will likely carry it westward,” recent climateĀ MeteorologistĀ said.
If the tropical system strengthens over the open ocean, however, it may be more susceptible to heading northward because to the physical forces produced by the Earth’s rotation.
The tropical system’s path beyond it, going near the Caribbean’s northern islands, is less certain. As westerly winds build near North America, one scenario allows the system to turn northward. In that event, it could pose a direct threat to Bermuda or possibly Atlantic Canada in early October. However, as it approaches the islands of the northern Caribbean and the Bahamas, the system has the potential to continue westward. In that case, it may approach the United States’ East Coast.
Only four names remain on the designated list for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season in 2021.
Once these names have been used, which is anticipated to happen this season, the World Meteorological Organization will employ a supplemental list of tropical storm names. This list will take the place of the Greek Alphabet, which was used to name storms during the extremely active hurricane seasons of 2020 and 2005.
Tropical depressions Peter and Rose, two more tropical systems, have dissipated over the Atlantic Ocean. On Wednesday night, Peter broke down north of Puerto Rico. Tropical Depression Rose has dissipated over the central Atlantic by Thursday morning.
Odette, a storm that first formed off the East Coast, has the potential to regenerate over the open waters of the north Atlantic, in addition to Tropical Depression 18 over the eastern Atlantic.
