Tropical Storm Teresa
By Friday, Sept. 24, the Atlantic had already produced more named storms than in an ordinary hurricane season, with 18 named storms in the books before Subtropical Storm Teresa was named on Friday afternoon.
At 11 p.m. EDT, Teresa formed 140 miles north-northwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm was travelling west-northwestward at 10 mph at the time of development.
“Over the weekend, this storm is predicted to travel north and then northeast before dissipating over open Atlantic waters, Meteorologist said. “On Sunday, moisture from Teresa will be dragged northward up the East Coast by a lingering cold front into Atlantic Canada.”
As a result of the storm, portions of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick may experience increased rainfall, which might result in localized flooding. Hoegg, on the other hand, predicted that the storm would be short-lived, with limited land repercussions.
“The storm will only last 36-48 hours at most, and the rains in Atlantic Canada will only cause isolated flooding,” she explained.
As the storm moves away from the islands, experts expect some increased surf to hit Bermuda through Sunday.
Teresa formed in a puddle left behind by Tropical Storm Peter, which disintegrated just north of Puerto Rico on Wednesday night.
This is not a “zombie storm,” as some people refer to it. According to recent climate Meteorologist, trackable circulation, or a storm center, must carry over to the new system for a zombie storm to have happened. That does not appear to have happened in this case, as only a small amount of Peter’s moisture survived and became a part of Teresa.
The National Hurricane Center would have brought back the name Peter rather than moving on to another name on the list if it had actually been a zombie storm.
Hurricane Paulette, which formed on Sept. 7 before making landfall and was degraded to a post-tropical cyclone by Sept. 16, is an example of a “zombie storm” from the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm was a Category 2 hurricane at its peak. On Sept. 21, the storm recovered tropical characteristics and was promoted to tropical storm status once more.
