Thunderstorm in Cambodia

Winds powerful enough to pull a billboard completely off its support system and onto unsuspecting cars below were caused by a violent rainstorm in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. Despite the harsh weather late last week, only one person was hurt.

As pounding rain and wind raced through the streets, pelting motor cars and drivers of tuk-tuks, carriages pulled by a motorcycle that are typical sources of transportation in the city, onlookers photographed the frightening image.
In the onslaught of wind, the billboard, which ironically said “Keep Cambodia Safe,” lost way and toppled to the ground, striking a tuk-tuk and its driver late Friday afternoon, June 10, local time.

“The wind was quite fierce. It arrived abruptly and caused the buildings to tremble “Newsflare spoke with Ny Samut, who was present at the moment of the incident. The maximum wind gusts during the rainstorm that finally led to the billboard’s downfall are unknown due to a lack of weather observations in this part of the world. As thunderstorms rumbled across the capital throughout the day on Friday, Phnom Penh’s main airport only registered a maximum wind gust of 22 mph (35 km/h).

Local authorities were photographed standing in ankle-deep flooding hours after the billboard collapsed as efforts to remove the torn billboard began. From June 10 to 12, the city’s airport received over 3 inches (75 mm) of rain.
The monsoon season has begun in Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and it will remain until November. Thunderstorms with the same severity as the one seen in Phnom Penh on June 10 are common during the monsoon season.
