Monsoonal rain continues in western India, while eastern India remains on alert for a potential tropical system next week.

Waves of moisture from the Indian Ocean will continue to reach parts of southern Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka into early next week. These areas have been hit particularly hard so far this monsoon season.

“Over the past three months, many locations across the western shores of India have received above-normal amounts of rain this monsoon season compared to normal,” said  Meteorologist.Persistent heavy rain has led to deadly flooding across the region.

As reported by the Times of India, 245 of the more than 1,050 deaths from this year’s monsoon have come from Maharashtra alone. As rain continues in southwestern India, a monsoon low will bring heavy rain to more northern locations in western India.

After a break from monsoonal rains and a drier stretch several days ago, the monsoon low will dump more rain in parts of western India and even southern Pakistan for the beginning of the week.By the middle of the week, this low will start to wane. The short-lived nature of the low in western India will keep flooding downpours to more localized levels.

Meanwhile, eastern parts of India will be watching the Bay of Bengal for possible tropical development next week.”There is the potential for a tropical low to strengthen east of India, in the Bay of Bengal as early as midweek,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk.

The low will continue to churn over the warm waters of the area for the early part of the week.

“There is the potential that conditions in this area would be just right for the low to strengthen to a depression,” Houk added.Whether this low develops into a depression or not, it will still send widespread, tropical downpours to the coast of eastern India midweek.

“Given how dry it has been across parts of northeastern India this season, the incoming rain should be beneficial overall,” explained Roys. However, there has been an uptick in moisture already this month, with several monsoon lows tracking into northeastern India.”The recent heavy rainfall, plus how heavy this next wave of tropical downpours could be, will increase the chance of flooding,” Roys said.

Locations from northeastern Andrea Pradesh to Orissa and West Bengal and as far inland as eastern Madhya Pradesh should be on alert for heavy rains for the middle and end of next week.
