Turkey and Syria Rocks Earthquake
After a massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey shortly after 4 a.m. local time on Monday, the death toll in Turkey and Syria approached 2,000. As of Monday evening local time, The Associated Press reported that hundreds of people were still missing and desperate rescue efforts were under way.
The enormous earthquake and its powerful aftershocks left behind catastrophic destruction. According to The AP, which cited local reports, hundreds of buildings were destroyed in both Turkey and Syria. At least 1,900 people had been killed and many more were believed to have been injured as of Monday evening local time in Turkey and Syria.
The important Turkish city of Gaziantep, which has a population of more than 1 million, is about 20 miles east-southeast of the epicenter of the earthquake, which had a depth of around 11 miles (17.9 kilometers). A shallower aftershock of 7.5 magnitude occurred on Monday afternoon, striking 6.2 miles (10.0 kilometers) south-southeast of Ekinözü, Turkey.
