Typhoon Yagi
One of the strongest storms of 2024, Typhoon Yagi, hit the Chinese island of Hainan on Friday, marking the most powerful typhoon there in 10 years. With wind speeds up to 230 kilometers per hour (140 mph), it was a Category 4 storm and the second strongest tropical cyclone of the year.
After hitting Hainan, Yagi weakened slightly but then strengthened again before making landfall in Vietnam. Over a million people were evacuated from Hainan and Guangdong, and many areas suffered power outages and flooding. Some 830,000 homes lost electricity, though power was restored to 260,000.
The typhoon earlier brought heavy rain to the Philippines, killing 13 people. In China, public transport was halted, and many schools, businesses, and beaches closed. Although the storm weakened, it still caused significant travel disruptions and damage.
Yagi is the strongest typhoon to hit Hainan since 2014’s Rammasun, which caused major damage and loss of life.
