US Frost Season In 2021

With just over a week since the autumnal equinox, the Northeast is getting a clear indication that fall has arrived. Many people haven’t heard the word “frost” since the spring, but Weather forecasters say that’s about to change.

According to Metrologists’ report, low temperatures in the Northeast will drop well into the 40s overnight on Thursday, with a few normally cooler spots reaching the upper and middle 30s, potentially resulting in the first frost of the season.

While the coldest areas of the Northeast are most likely to see frost this week, it will be an unseasonably cold start to October for many across the region.

Many locations from the northern mid-Atlantic to the Canadian border are expected to have temperatures that are 3-8 degrees lower than normal for the first morning of October.

“Frost development will be most beneficial for mountains and higher elevations in the interior Northeast,” a Metrologist predicted.

The Green and White Mountains in New England, as well as the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Poconos, are among the areas where residents are most likely to wake up to frosty conditions Friday morning, according to recent climate metrologist report. To form frost, atmospheric conditions near the ground must meet a certain threshold.

“Frost is formed when water vapor in a near-freezing layer of air interacts with a surface that is at or below freezing,” recent climate Meteorologist explained. “This usually happens on car tops and grassy surfaces, which are a few degrees cooler than the surrounding air during the night.”

In terms of the timing of this chilly weather, forecasters say the first frost will arrive in most of these areas on time. “The growing season has already ended in most of the areas that could be impacted by this potential frost,” a Meteorologist said.

While widespread crop damage is unlikely, frost can cause problems for some recreational gardeners in the affected area who are not properly prepared.

Forecasters say that covering any plants in the ground is the best way to protect them from frost damage. Lightweight tarps, old bedsheets, newspaper, and straw are just a few examples of items that can be used to prevent heat from escaping from the soil.

When frost is predicted, Climate forecasters advise bringing potted plants indoors. Because their roots are not underground, potted plants are much more vulnerable to frost damage.
