Winter’s Surprise Return

After enjoying warm spring-like weather for weeks, some parts of the United States will suddenly feel like winter again next week. This means temperatures could drop below freezing for much of the eastern half of the country.

Tuesday is the official start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. But despite this, it will feel more like winter early next week. More than half of the people in the US might experience temperatures at or below freezing.

This cold weather isn’t normal for this time of year and could harm farming in the Southeast where the growing season has begun.

Many people in the eastern half of the country have been enjoying warmer weather than usual this past week. But that will change on Sunday as cold weather moves in from the Midwest, spreading south and eastward.

By Monday, it will be significantly colder across much of the eastern half of the country. For example, St. Louis might go from around 60 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday to the low 40s on Monday. Atlanta could see a drop of about 15 degrees from Saturday to Monday.

While these temperatures might not be extremely cold, they’re more like what you’d expect in the middle of winter in some parts of the South.

On Monday, Memphis, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama, could have temperatures similar to those typically seen in mid-January.

The cold air will continue to move eastward Monday night into Tuesday, affecting much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. For instance, New York City could see temperatures drop from around 60 degrees on Saturday to 45 degrees on Tuesday.

Temperatures will also be lower in the mornings. On Tuesday morning, temperatures in the Southeast could be 10 to 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. Atlanta, Charlotte, and Birmingham, Alabama, might all see temperatures drop into the low 30s, which could harm plants.

If you have plants outdoors, it’s best to bring them inside to protect them from the cold. But if you can’t do that, covering them with sheets, towels, or blankets can help trap the heat from the ground around them. Make sure to use stakes to support the coverings or drape them over patio furniture so they don’t damage the plants.

Temperatures will warm up again by the end of the week across the Southeast, so get ready for spring weather once more.
